Important Legislation Signed by the Governor this Week

This week concluded with numerous bills being signed into law by the governor, and I want to take this opportunity to highlight those that could be of particular interest to residents of the 84th District.

The governor approved House Bill 26, now known as Act 91 of 2018, which amends the Vehicle Code to permit organizational registration plates for use on motorcycles; allows for abbreviated portions of an organization’s name on special plates; and establishes new specialty plates.

House Bill 163 was also signed into law by the governor and is now Act 95 of 2018. Under the new law, the federally mandated driver’s license suspensions for drug/controlled substance convictions, as well as state-imposed suspensions for five other crimes, was removed, while a requirement for suspension for terroristic threats made against any school property was added.

House Bill 544 was signed into law by the governor and is now Act 98 of 2018. The new law amends the state’s recreational use of land liability law to clarify and expand its protections for landowners.

House Bill 1013, now Act 103 of 2018, requires reimbursement for emergency medical services provided when no transport of a patient occurs and establishes the Quality Eye Care of Insured Pennsylvanians Act.

Senate Bill 801 was signed into law and is now Act 140 of 2018. The new law permits a borough or third-class city to purchase used personal property from volunteer emergency service organizations without bid.

Senate Bill 803 was signed into law by the governor and is now Act 142 of 2018. The new law permits townships of the second class to purchase used personal property from volunteer emergency service organizations without bid.

Senate Bill 1127, now Act 160 of 2018, amends the Crimes Code and the Procurement Code in order to create new penalties for trafficking in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

These are a few of the many initiatives passed by the General Assembly this year and signed into law by the governor. Please feel free to ask questions about these or other issues considered by the House. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you.
