Everett Urges Pennsylvanians to Take Broadband Speed Test
10/4/2018
HARRISBURG – Rep. Garth Everett (R-Lycoming/Union) is calling on all Pennsylvania residents and businesses to participate in a broadband speed test being conducted by The Center for Rural Pennsylvania (CRP) in partnership with Penn State University.

“I am determined to increase rural broadband access, but we need the help of all residents of the Commonwealth. Please consider pitching in to help your neighbors and take a minute to complete this speed test,” Everett said.

A hurdle facing the General Assembly as lawmakers look to address the problem is the lack of research about actual internet speeds in various communities across the state. Broadband access impacts the economy, educational opportunities, health care access, and other critical needs of a district.

According to Penn State faculty member Steve Sampsell, 800,000 Pennsylvanians lack access to high-speed internet, and two-thirds are people living in rural areas. In his research, Sampsell noted many anecdotal stories of Pennsylvanians who face challenges in their everyday lives due to slow internet. Teachers, business owners, medical professionals, and others told their stories about how they are constantly at a disadvantage because of wasted time and a lack of resources.

“The goal is to have as many rural folks as possible take the test to document the speed difference between folks on cable ‘in town’ and those on so called ‘high speed DSL’ out in the country,” Everett said. “The greater we can identify the extent of the differences, the better we can help people.”

Everett is vice chairman of CRP which is supporting the internet speed study with a $50,000 grant.

The test is available here. Participation is crucial to helping lawmakers resolve the issue.
