Everett Signs Letter of Outrage to President Obama Over Transgender Restroom Usage Threat Against Schools
5/20/2016
HARRISBURG – Rep. Garth Everett (R-Lycoming/Union) joined 96 House Republican Caucus colleagues in sending a letter to President Barack Obama and Everett registered his outrage over administration threats to withhold federal funds due to transgender restroom access.

“The Pennsylvania House has not taken any action on this issue in any direction and, personally, I believe the current sex-separated restroom policy in schools is fine the way it is,” said Everett. “The fact that the Obama administration is trying to force schools into mandating a transgender restroom usage policy is an outrageous overreach. This letter and administrative threat are plainly despicable and reeks of funding extortion.”

The administration’s letter from the U.S. Department of Education and the Justice Department was sent from Washington, D.C. on Friday, May 13. The reply, signed by Everett and the other members, states the Obama administration’s action sacrifices the fundamental privacy rights associated with intimate bodily functions for millions of school students in the nation.

Everett said Gov. Tom Wolf would potentially stand in the way of any legislative action on the issue.

“We in the General Assembly will do what we can to counteract the threats of funding cuts and lawsuits from this administration on the school restroom issue,” said Everett. “It is a shame that Gov. Tom Wolf has joined in the Obama effort and will veto any legislative action we may take.”
