Everett Remains Concerned About State Police Aviation Coverage
HARRISBURG – During the House Appropriations Committee budget hearing focused on the Pennsylvania State Police, committee member Rep. Garth Everett (R-Lycoming) raised ongoing concerns with the deployment of department helicopters in the Northern Tier region.

“I have kept my efforts at getting adequate state police coverage going ever since Aviation Unit IV that was stationed in Williamsport was moved in January 2012,” said Everett. “The unit had operated out of Williamsport Regional Airport from 1968 to 2012, and I believe the move to Hazleton was not in the best interests of our residents in the Northern Tier of the Commonwealth.”

Everett said this unit is a valuable aid to the state police in transport assistance, searches, criminal surveillance and aerial photography, among others. The Williamsport Regional Airport location had been, and would continue to be, ideal, due to the elevation and its central location in our region. Not only has Lycoming County lost this service, but it also affects Bradford, Cameron, Clinton, Montour, Northumberland, Potter, Snyder, Sullivan, Tioga and Union counties.

The unit had been scheduled for deployment in University Park at State College, but that has yet to be done, according to testimony from State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan at the hearing. Everett said this will only increase the response time in the event of an emergency.

“We need this coverage in the region and I will continue to press this issue with the State Police.” Everett said.
