Everett Votes to Advance Budget Bill to Senate

HARRISBURG – Following a nearly day-long debate Wednesday, Rep. Garth Everett (R-Lycoming) voted to advance House Bill 1437 to the Senate for its consideration. The bill, which passed 108-92, contains the General Fund budget proposal.

“This is a vital step toward reaching an agreement on a fiscally responsible state budget,” said Everett. “There is an increase in education funding and this bill holds the line on taxes, while taking care of the core functions of state government. The allocation of $28.3 billion of taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars has to be done in an efficient manner and I believe this bill hits that mark”

Everett emphasized the fact that there is much more work ahead before the final state budget is put in place for fiscal year 2013-14.

“The Senate will obviously have their own ideas as to how the budget will look as we approach the June 30 deadline,” said Everett. “In the end, there has to be a final agreement between the House, Senate and Governor Tom Corbett before a budget is in place. There are ongoing talks taking place in an effort to hammer out an agreement satisfactory to all parties, and that will continue over the next two weeks.”

The Senate Appropriations Committee will be the next group to consider House Bill 1437.
