Everett Issues Challenge To “Take A Swing” Against Breast Cancer

The fight against breast cancer is highlighted in the month of July in House Resolution 282, calling on Pennsylvania residents to “Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer” said Rep. Garth Everett (R-Lycoming), author of the resolution.

“The effort to fund breast cancer research in Pennsylvania has been strong with the series of Take a Swing Against Breast Cancer events throughout the Commonwealth, and another will take place in Williamsport on July 26,” said Everett. “I challenge both of my area legislative colleagues and other elected officials, community and business leaders to get a team together and join me in this event. It is fitting that we do this in Williamsport, one of the great cities that has a rich history in our national pastime of baseball.”

House Resolution 282, which passed the House unanimously in June, salutes the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and the Pennsylvania Association of Community Bankers for presenting the series of Home Run Derby events throughout the Commonwealth.  It is part of a campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer and to highlight education, advocacy and outreach on this disease that affects 103,000 Pennsylvania women, with 9,500 more being diagnosed each year.

“Trust me, you don’t have to be able to hit a home run to participate in Take a Swing – all you have to do is get a team of four out there and try to hit some balls from the pitching machine,” said Everett. “It’s about supporting breast cancer awareness and education and having some fun at the ballpark – it’s a great cause and a great time.”

The Williamsport event will take place from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, at historic Bowman Field, 1700 W. 4th St., home of the Williamsport Crosscutters of the New York Penn league.

Other minor league baseball franchises in Pennsylvania are hosting similar events as well during the month of July; they include the Lehigh Valley, Erie, Washington, Harrisburg, Scranton, York, Lancaster, Altoona and State College.
